Figma plugin

The Figma to Maglr plugin copies elements or frames from Figma so you can paste them into the Maglr editor with their styling. Elements are pasted into the scene you have open, and frames are pasted as new scenes. Interactions, animations and some Figma properties are not imported; see the limitations below.


Installing the Figma to Maglr plugin


You install the Figma to Maglr plugin from Figma's Community, once per Figma account.


  1. Open the Figma to Maglr plugin page in Figma's Community. You can also get there from the Maglr editor: open the options menu marked M in the top-left corner, choose Import from Figma, and click Install app in Figma.
  2. Add the plugin to your Figma account from that page.


Importing elements from Figma


To import individual Figma elements or groups into a scene in the Maglr editor, copy them with the Figma to Maglr plugin and paste them into the editor.


  1. In Figma, select one or more elements or groups.
  2. Open the Figma to Maglr plugin.
  3. Choose Copy as element.
  4. In the Maglr editor, open the page and scene you want the elements in.
  5. Press ⌘V (Mac) or Ctrl+V (Windows).


The elements are added to the scene you have open. If they fit completely inside the part of the scene you can currently see, they keep the position they had inside their Figma frame. If they don't, they are moved together, with their spacing intact, to the left edge or the top edge of the visible part of the scene (or both, if they were out of view in both directions). If the pasted elements extend past the edge of the scene, the scene is enlarged to fit them.


Importing Figma frames as scenes


To import whole Figma frames into the Maglr editor, copy them with the Figma to Maglr plugin and paste them into a page. Each frame becomes one scene.


  1. In Figma, select one or more frames.
  2. Open the Figma to Maglr plugin.
  3. Choose Copy as scene.
  4. In the Maglr editor, open the page you want to add the scenes to.
  5. Press ⌘V (Mac) or Ctrl+V (Windows).


The frames are added as new scenes at the end of the page. If the scene you have open is empty, the first frame is placed in that scene instead of a new one. Each scene takes the width, height, name and background color of its Figma frame (solid fills only). Only Figma frames become scenes: a selected group or loose element is not turned into a scene and is left out.


Limitations of the Figma import


The Figma to Maglr plugin transfers design only. Interactions, prototype connections and animations created in Figma are not imported into Maglr.


These Figma properties are imported differently in Maglr:

  • Auto layout: auto layout is not kept. Elements are placed at fixed positions.
  • Border position: outside borders aren't kept. Most borders are imported centered on the edge; inside borders on rectangles stay inside.
  • Gradient borders: a gradient border becomes a solid border in the gradient's first color.
  • Dashed borders: on a rectangle with an inside border, a dashed border keeps the dashed style, but not its dash and gap lengths.
  • Multiple fills: a layer keeps only one fill. A layer with an image fill keeps the image, plus one solid fill as a color overlay.
  • Multiple borders: only the first visible border on a layer is used.
  • Shadows: only one drop shadow and one inner shadow per layer are imported.
  • Fonts: if a font or font style isn't available in Maglr, the editor shows a "Font missing" notice after you paste, so you can replace it with a font that is available.


These Figma properties are not imported:

  • Dynamic strokes
  • Dash cap settings
  • Brush strokes
  • Line-end arrows
  • Gradient and image text strokes (solid text strokes are imported)
  • Diamond gradients
  • Progressive blur
  • The Plus darker blend mode
  • Noise and texture effects
  • Boolean operations (union, subtract, intersect and exclude)


When part of a layer can't be converted (a fill, an effect or the layer type), the editor shows a warning with the layer's name in brackets, such as "Unsupported fill type" or "Unsupported effect type". If layers are left out entirely, the warning lists the layers that were skipped.


Frequently asked questions


Why does nothing happen when I paste a copy from Figma?


Maglr can only import designs that were copied with the Figma to Maglr plugin. If you copy in Figma without the plugin and paste in the Maglr editor, nothing is added and the editor shows the warning "cannot paste figma element directly, use the Figma to Maglr plugin". Select the design in Figma, open the Figma to Maglr plugin, choose Copy as element or Copy as scene, and paste again.


Where do pasted Figma elements appear?


Elements copied with Copy as element in the Figma to Maglr plugin are added to the scene you have open in the Maglr editor. If they fit completely inside the part of the scene you can currently see, they keep the position they had inside their Figma frame. If they don't, they are moved together, with their spacing intact, to the left edge or the top edge of the visible part of the scene (or both, if they were out of view in both directions). If they extend past the edge of the scene, the scene is enlarged to fit them.


What happens to fonts that Maglr doesn't have?


After you paste a design from the Figma to Maglr plugin, the Maglr editor checks its fonts. If a font or font style isn't available in Maglr, a "Font missing" notice appears with the message "Replace the missing font with an alternative". To choose a font to use instead:


  1. Click Replace in the notice.
  2. In the Replace font popup, click a font marked "Font missing" or a style marked "Style missing".
  3. Under Replace with, choose a font in Font (and a style in Style, if you selected a style).
  4. Click Replace font.
  5. Repeat steps 2 to 4 for each missing font or style.


If you click Cancel, the missing fonts stay as they are.


Can I import Figma prototypes, interactions or animations?


No. The Figma to Maglr plugin transfers design only: layers, styling, effects and text. Prototype connections, interactions and animations created in Figma are not imported into Maglr.


How do I see which layers weren't imported?


When you paste a design from the Figma to Maglr plugin, the Maglr editor shows a warning when part of a layer can't be converted (a fill, an effect or the layer type), with the layer's name in brackets, such as "Unsupported fill type" or "Unsupported effect type". If layers are left out entirely, the warning reads "Not all layers were successfully imported" and lists the layers that were skipped.
