Working with layers & groups

The Layers panel lists every element and group in your scene and controls which elements sit in front of others. Each element and group on the canvas appears as a layer in the list. You find it in the Layers tab of the panel on the right side of the editor.

Opening the Layers panel

The Layers panel is the Layers tab in the panel on the right side of the editor, next to the Element, Media and General tabs. To open it:

1. In the editor, go to the panel on the right side.
2. Click the Layers tab.

The list shows the layers for the layout you're editing (desktop or mobile).

Moving the Layers panel to the left side

You can move the Layers panel to the left side of the editor:

1. Click the button in the top-right corner of the Layers panel header.
2. To move the panel back to the right, click the same button in the panel on the left side.

While the Layers panel is on the left side, the Layers tab in the right panel is greyed out.

Changing the layer order

The order of the Layers list sets which elements sit in front of others on the canvas. A layer higher in the list sits in front of the layers below it. To change the order:

1. In the Layers tab, drag a layer up or down the list.
2. Drop it where you want it.

When you add a new element and no layer is selected, the new element goes to the top of the list, in front of everything else. If a layer is selected when you add it, the new element goes directly above that layer, in the same group.

You can also change the order by right-clicking a layer and choosing Bring forward, Bring to top, Send backward or Send to back.

Moving layers into and out of groups

To put a layer inside a group, drag it onto the group in the Layers list. To take a layer out of a group, drag it out of the group to another place in the list.

If you hold a dragged layer over a closed group for about a second, the group opens so you can drop the layer in the right place. To open or close a group yourself, click the arrow next to the group.

Renaming layers

Clear layer names make the Layers list easier to scan, and the same name is used in your statistics. To rename a layer:

1. In the Layers tab, double-click the layer name.
2. Type a new name.
3. Press Enter, or click outside the field, to save it.

If you clear the name and press Enter, the layer gets its default name back.

How layer names appear in your statistics

The layer name is also the name an element gets in your statistics. It is published with the element and sent along with interactions such as clicks, video and audio plays and form submissions. The Statistics page lists interactions per element under its layer name, and Google Analytics receives the same name. For example, if you name a button "PDF download button", its clicks show up under "PDF download button".

Selecting multiple layers

You can select several layers in the Layers panel at once, for example to group them:

• Click: selects one layer.
• Shift-click: selects a range of layers.
• ⌘-click (Mac) or Ctrl-click (Windows): adds a layer to the selection, or removes it.

You can only select multiple layers that are at the same level: all inside the same group, or all at the top level of the list. If you click a layer at a different level, a new selection starts.

Grouping and ungrouping layers

A group combines several layers into one layer in the list, so you can move and arrange them together. The Group, Ungroup, Copy and Delete buttons sit at the top of the Layers panel. They are icons; hover over one to see its name.

Grouping layers

To group layers:

1. In the Layers tab, select the layers you want to group. They must be at the same level.
2. Click Group at the top of the panel, or press ⌘ + G (Mac) or Ctrl + G (Windows).

Group works when at least one layer is selected. When two or more layers are selected, you can also right-click the selection and choose Group selection.

Ungrouping a group

To ungroup a group:

1. In the Layers tab, select one group.
2. Click Ungroup at the top of the panel, or press ⌘ + Shift + G (Mac) or Ctrl + Shift + G (Windows).

The layers stay in place, outside the group. Ungroup works only when exactly one group is selected.

Copying and deleting layers

The Copy button at the top of the Layers panel duplicates the selected layers. The Delete button deletes them.

Locking, hiding and color-labeling layers

Each row in the Layers list has three buttons:

• Lock icon: locks the layer. A locked element can't be selected or moved on the canvas.
• Eye icon: hides or shows the layer. A hidden element isn't visible on the canvas. It is also hidden on the published page, unless an action shows it.
• Circle icon: adds a color label. Hover over the circle to pick one of 10 colors, or click the trash icon to remove the label. Color labels only help you organise the Layers list; they don't show on the page.

Lock and visibility apply to the layout you're editing (desktop or mobile). Locking or hiding a layer on desktop doesn't lock or hide it on mobile, and the other way round.

You can still select a locked or hidden element by clicking it in the Layers panel.

Searching and locking or unfolding all layers

The bottom of the Layers panel has a search field and two buttons:

• Search field: filters the list by layer name or element type.
• Lock all / Unlock all: locks or unlocks every layer in the list.
• Unfold all / Collapse all: opens or closes all groups in the list.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I select an element on the canvas?

The element is probably locked or hidden in the Layers panel. Locked and hidden elements can't be selected or moved on the canvas. Click the element in the Layers tab of the right panel to select it, or click its lock icon to unlock it.

Does hiding a layer hide it on the published page?

Yes. When you hide a layer with the eye icon in the Layers panel, the element is also hidden on the published page, unless an action shows it.

Does hiding or locking a layer on desktop also apply to mobile?

No. Hiding and locking a layer in the Layers panel apply only to the layout you're editing. Hiding or locking a layer on desktop doesn't change it on mobile, and the other way round.

Why can't I select these layers together?

In the Layers panel, you can only select multiple layers that are at the same level: all inside the same group, or all at the top level of the list. If one layer is inside a group and the other isn't, clicking the second layer starts a new selection.

Does deleting a group delete its contents?

Yes. Deleting a group in the Layers panel deletes the group and every layer inside it. To remove only the group and keep its layers, select the group and click Ungroup at the top of the Layers panel instead.
