Download a publication as a ZIP

You can download a published Maglr project as a ZIP file to host it on your own web server or to use it offline. The ZIP contains the project's pages as HTML and JavaScript files, together with the optimised images, audio and video they use.

ZIP export requires an annual license. Which export options you see depends on your subscription.

Requirements for exporting a project as a ZIP

To export a project as a ZIP, all of these must apply:

  • Your Maglr license is an annual license, and your subscription includes at least one ZIP export option.
  • Your subscription has not expired.
  • The project is live, or a preview of it has been published.
  • The project is not a Micro content project or a Print publication. To export one of these, switch the project to a Slide or Stack publication first.
  • The project uses freeform pages. ZIP export only supports freeform pages.

Exporting a project as a ZIP

To download a project as a ZIP:

  1. Make sure the project is live, or that a preview of it has been published. Otherwise the export options are greyed out.
  2. Open the project's share options. In the projects overview, open the project menu and click Share. Inside the project, click Share project in the sidebar.
  3. Open the Export .zip tab.
  4. Under "How would you like to use the exported project?", select Local version (offline), Server version (includes pre-rendering) or Server version (including URL redirect and pre-rendering).
  5. Click Generate project and wait for the export to finish.
  6. Click Download ZIP. Your browser opens a new tab and downloads the ZIP file.

You can also open the share options from More share options in the publish popover inside the project. If you select a different export option after generating, click Generate project again.

ZIP export options

The Export .zip tab offers up to three export options. Which ones you see depends on your subscription.

Local version (offline)

The Local version (offline) ZIP export runs without a web server. You can open it from a folder on your desktop, a USB stick, a Dropbox folder or a network share. To start the project, open the index.html file, then browse the pages.

Server version (includes pre-rendering)

The Server version (includes pre-rendering) ZIP export is for hosting the project on any web server. Each page is also rendered as a separate static HTML page, so search engines that don't run JavaScript can index the content. This option does not need a .htaccess configuration.

  • Each page is rendered as static HTML, including its metadata, which helps SEO.
  • Page URLs end in .html, with the structure /project/page.html. They differ from the URLs of the online version.
  • Each page can be opened directly through its own URL.
  • Your analytics settings are included in the exported pages.

Server version (including URL redirect and pre-rendering)

The Server version (including URL redirect and pre-rendering) ZIP export keeps the same URL structure as the online version of the project. Each page is also rendered as static HTML. If you change a page's URL and export again, this option redirects the old URL, which search engines may already have indexed, to the new page. This option requires a web server that supports .htaccess configuration, which it uses for the URL redirects.

  • Page URLs are the same as in the online version, with the structure /project/page-name.
  • Each page can be opened directly through its own URL.
  • Old page URLs redirect to the new page.
  • Your analytics settings are included in the exported pages.
  • The ZIP includes a sitemap.xml file for search engines.
  • The ZIP includes a robots.txt file for search engines.

Sync directly to FTP

With a Maglr Enterprise license, you can publish changes from the dashboard directly to your own (local) web server, instead of downloading a ZIP. Click here for more information about this option.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I export my Micro content project?

Micro content projects can't be exported as a ZIP. The Export .zip tab shows a warning instead of the export options. To export the project, switch it to a Slide or Stack publication first. Print publications can't be exported either; for these, the Export .zip tab does not appear.

Why is the Export .zip tab greyed out?

The Export .zip tab is greyed out when the project is not live and has no published preview, or when your subscription has expired. To enable the tab, make the project live or publish a preview of it. The tab shows an Open project settings link to help you activate and publish the project.

Can I download a ZIP after my license has expired?

Download every ZIP you need before your license expires. After it expires, the Export .zip tab is greyed out. If you still need a ZIP after that, contact Maglr support to request one.

Why don't I see all three export options?

Each ZIP export option is a separate part of your subscription, so you only see the options your subscription includes.

Which ZIP export option should I choose for SEO?

Both server versions render each page as static HTML, so search engines can index the content. Choose Server version (including URL redirect and pre-rendering) to keep the same URLs as the online version and redirect old URLs to new pages; it needs a web server with .htaccess support. Choose Server version (includes pre-rendering) if your web server doesn't support .htaccess; its page URLs end in .html.
