Activate navigation help tooltip

The navigation help tip is a small pop-up that appears next to the navigation bar of a published publication and tells visitors how to move through its pages. It has a close button. You turn it on per navigation environment, so it applies to the publications shown in that environment, and you can set its title and text yourself.

Turning on the navigation help tip

To show the navigation help tip in the publications of a navigation environment, turn on Show navigation help tip in that environment's settings:

  1. In the dashboard, open the Settings menu and select Navigation environment.
  2. Click Edit settings (pencil icon) next to the navigation environment you want to change.
  3. On the General tab, under Special settings, turn on Show navigation help tip.
  4. Click Save navigation.

To stop showing the navigation help tip, turn off Show navigation help tip in the same place and click Save navigation.

Customising the navigation help tip text

You set the title and message of the navigation help tip on the Texts tab of the navigation environment's settings. The Texts tab has a separate tab for each language that is active in your account, so you fill in the help tip text per language.

  1. In the dashboard, open the Settings menu and select Navigation environment.
  2. Click Edit settings (pencil icon) next to the navigation environment you want to change.
  3. Go to the Texts tab.
  4. If your account has several languages, select the tab of the language you want to edit.
  5. Open Help tooltip.
  6. Enter a title in Small title for help tooltip.
  7. Enter the message in Short descriptive text how to use the navigation. The message can be up to 150 characters.
  8. Repeat steps 4 to 7 for each other language.
  9. Click Save navigation.

If you leave a field empty, the navigation help tip shows a built-in default text in the language of the publication. In English, the defaults are:

  • Title: "Go to next page"
  • Text: "Use these controls to navigate through this publication."

The title and the text fall back separately, so you can fill in one and leave the other empty.

How visitors see the navigation help tip

When the navigation help tip is turned on for a navigation environment, visitors of its publications see it as follows:

  • It appears next to the navigation bar when the visitor opens the publication.
  • It keeps appearing on later visits until the visitor closes it with its close button.
  • After the visitor closes it, it stays hidden in that browser for one year, also in other publications on the same domain. In another browser or on another device, the visitor sees it again.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't I see the navigation help tip in my publication anymore?

The navigation help tip stays hidden for one year in a browser where it was closed once. If you closed it yourself, open the publication in a private or incognito window to see it again. If it still doesn't appear, check that Show navigation help tip is turned on in the General tab of the navigation environment's settings, and that you clicked Save navigation.

What text does the navigation help tip show if I leave the text fields empty?

If the title field under Help tooltip on the Texts tab is empty, the navigation help tip shows a built-in default title in the language of the publication. In English, that is "Go to next page". If the text field is empty, it shows a built-in default text. In English, that is "Use these controls to navigate through this publication."
