Push contacts & forms to Zapier

You can send new subscribers and contact form submissions from a Maglr navigation environment to Zapier, or to any other tool that accepts a webhook URL, such as Make. When you switch this on, Maglr posts each new submission from the subscribe form or the contact form in the side menu to the webhook URL you set for that form. This article uses Zapier and Mailchimp as the example, to add new subscribers to a Mailchimp audience.

Zapier is an online automation tool that connects apps such as Gmail, Slack and Mailchimp. A workflow in Zapier is called a Zap.

Sending new subscribers to Zapier

To send new subscribers to Zapier, you create a Zap that starts with a webhook trigger, add that webhook URL to the Subscribe tab of your navigation environment settings in Maglr, and then add an action in Zapier, such as adding the subscriber to Mailchimp.

Before you start:

• The subscribe option must be switched on. In the navigation environment settings, open the Side menu tab and, under Activate options, tick Subscribe in the Sidepanel column. Until you do, the webhook settings on the Subscribe tab are unavailable. Read more about setting up subscriptions.
• The Zap uses Webhooks by Zapier, which Zapier marks as a Premium app. Your Zapier plan must include it.

Creating the webhook trigger in Zapier

The first part of the Zap is a webhook trigger, which gives you the URL that Maglr sends new subscribers to.

1. Log in to your Zapier account and create a new Zap.
2. As the trigger, choose Webhooks by Zapier.
3. As the trigger event, choose Catch Hook and click Continue.

4. Copy the Custom Webhook URL. Keep the Zapier tab open, and open the Maglr dashboard in another browser tab.

Adding the Zapier webhook URL in Maglr

To make Maglr send new subscribers to your Zap, add the Zapier webhook URL to the navigation environment that collects the subscribers.

1. In the Maglr dashboard, go to Settings > Navigation environment.
2. Click Edit settings on the environment that collects the subscribers.
3. Open the Subscribe tab.
4. Tick Push subscription with webhook.
5. Paste the Zapier webhook URL into the URL webhook field.
6. Click Send testdata. Maglr sends a test record to the URL, and a success notice appears if the webhook responded.
7. Click Save navigation.

From now on, Maglr sends each new subscription from this navigation environment to the Zapier webhook URL. Zapier acts on it once you finish the Zap and turn it on.

Adding the Mailchimp action in Zapier

After the webhook trigger receives data from Maglr, you add the action that Zapier runs for each new subscriber. This example adds the subscriber to a Mailchimp audience.

1. Back in Zapier, test the trigger. Zapier finds the test record that Maglr sent when you clicked Send testdata. The record contains your own name and email address, not a real subscriber's.

2. Add an action step and choose Mailchimp as the app.

3. As the action event, choose Add/Update Subscriber and click Continue.

4. Connect your Mailchimp account to Zapier. Your credentials are encrypted & can be removed at any time.
5. Choose the Mailchimp Audience that new subscribers should be added to.
6. In the Subscriber Email field, select the email field from the Maglr trigger.

7. Fill in any other fields you want to use for new subscribers, and click Continue.
8. Test the action. If you test with the record from Send testdata, Mailchimp adds or updates your own email address in the audience.
9. Turn the Zap on.

Sending contact form submissions to a webhook

The contact form in the side menu of a navigation environment can send each submission to a webhook URL, such as a Zapier or Make webhook. You set this up on the Contact tab of the navigation environment settings. The contact form must be switched on first: in the Side menu tab, under Activate options, tick Contact form in the Sidepanel column. Until you do, the settings on the Contact tab are unavailable.

1. In the Maglr dashboard, go to Settings > Navigation environment.
2. Click Edit settings on the environment whose contact form you want to connect.
3. Open the Contact tab.
4. Under Forward via, tick Push the data to a Zapier or Make integration.
5. Paste your webhook URL into the URL webhook field.
6. Click Send testdata. A success notice appears if the webhook responded.
7. Click Save navigation.

The webhook and email can run side by side: if Send per mail to to following email(s) stays ticked, the contact form submissions are also emailed to the addresses listed there.

Data sent to the webhook

For each new subscription, Maglr sends these fields to the webhook URL on the Subscribe tab:

• email: the subscriber's email address.
• firstname and lastname: the subscriber's first and last name.
• lang: the language code of the publication the visitor subscribed from, such as en_EN.
• domain: the domain of the navigation environment.
• type: Registration for a real subscription, or Test for the record sent by Send testdata.

The test record from Send testdata contains the name and email address of the user who clicked the button. In Zapier, map these fields to the fields of your action, such as Subscriber Email in Mailchimp.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still get an email for new subscribers when the webhook is on?

Yes, if Send emails to the contact email is ticked on the Subscribe tab of the navigation environment settings. The email and the webhook work independently, so with both ticked, each new subscription is emailed and sent to the webhook. If the webhook doesn't respond to a real subscription, Maglr emails the subscription anyway, with a note that the webhook did not respond.

Where do the emails about new subscribers go?

Maglr emails new subscriptions to the addresses listed under Send per mail to to following email(s) on the Contact tab of the navigation environment settings. If no addresses are listed there, the emails go to the main user of the Maglr account.

Why does Zapier show my own name and email in the test?

Zapier's test shows the test record that Maglr sent when you clicked Send testdata on the Subscribe or Contact tab of the navigation environment settings. That test record uses the name and email address of the user who clicked the button, so it isn't a real subscriber or contact request.

Can I use Make or another tool instead of Zapier?

Yes. The Subscribe and Contact tabs of the navigation environment settings accept any webhook URL, so you can paste a webhook URL from Make or another automation tool instead of a Zapier URL.
