Connect your Sitemap to Google Search Console

Every Maglr domain has a sitemap at /sitemap.xml once the domain's Index for search engines setting is switched on. The sitemap lists the projects that are live on that domain. Submit it to Google Search Console so Google finds your projects sooner and you can follow their indexing status.


Turning on indexing for your domain


A Maglr domain only serves a sitemap when Index for search engines is switched on for that domain. Only users with the Super admin role can change it.


  1. In the Maglr dashboard, go to Settings > Domain names.
  2. Click the pencil icon next to the domain.
  3. In the Statistics & integration section, switch on Index for search engines.
  4. Click Save changes.


With this setting on, the domain's robots.txt file allows search engines to crawl it and points them to the sitemap. With it off, search engines are told not to index any project on that domain, and /sitemap.xml shows only the text "sitemap disabled in domain settings".


Switching off Index for search engines removes all projects on that domain from search engine indexing. Pages that are already indexed take some time to disappear from the search results.


Finding your sitemap


Your Maglr sitemap is at /sitemap.xml on your domain, for example https://publications.yourcompany.com/sitemap.xml. This works for custom domains and for yourcompany.maglr.com-style domains alike.


The sitemap is a sitemap index: it links to one separate sitemap for each project that is live on the domain. Open the address in your browser to check that it loads. If the page shows only the text "sitemap disabled in domain settings", Index for search engines is switched off for that domain.


Verifying your domain in Google Search Console


Google Search Console asks you to prove that you own a domain before you can submit its sitemap. Maglr supports Google's HTML file verification method for a URL prefix property. You need the Super admin role for steps 4 to 7.


  1. In Google Search Console, add a URL prefix property for your domain, for example https://publications.yourcompany.com.
  2. Choose the HTML file verification method.
  3. Copy the full name of the HTML file Google offers, for example googlef3f448a26fd0.html.
  4. In the Maglr dashboard, go to Settings > Domain names.
  5. Click the pencil icon next to the domain.
  6. In the Statistics & integration section, paste the file name into Google Search Console implementation.
  7. Click Save changes.
  8. In Google Search Console, click Verify.


A Domain property in Google Search Console is verified with a DNS record at your domain provider instead. That option only works for a custom domain you own, so for a yourcompany.maglr.com-style domain, use a URL prefix property.


Submitting your sitemap to Google Search Console


To submit your Maglr sitemap, Index for search engines must be switched on for the domain in Maglr, and the domain must already be a verified property in Google Search Console.


  1. Sign in to Google Search Console.
  2. In the property selector in the left sidebar, select the property for your domain. If it isn't listed, add and verify it first with Add property, as described in Verifying your domain in Google Search Console.

  1. In the Add a new sitemap field, enter the sitemap address. For a URL prefix property, enter sitemap.xml. For a Domain property, enter the full address, for example https://publications.yourcompany.com/sitemap.xml.

  1. Click Submit.


Google processes the sitemap after you submit it, which can take a while. Because the Maglr sitemap is a sitemap index, Google Search Console also lists the separate sitemap of each project on the domain.


Frequently asked questions


Why does my sitemap say "sitemap disabled in domain settings"?


The Index for search engines setting is switched off for that domain. A Maglr domain only serves a sitemap at /sitemap.xml when this setting is on. To switch it on, go to Settings > Domain names, edit the domain, and switch on Index for search engines in the Statistics & integration section. Then save your changes.


Does a yourcompany.maglr.com domain have a sitemap?


Yes. Every Maglr domain, including yourcompany.maglr.com-style domains, has a sitemap at /sitemap.xml once Index for search engines is switched on for it. In Google Search Console, add this type of domain as a URL prefix property, because a Domain property needs a DNS record on a domain you own.


Do I have to submit the sitemap for Google to find my projects?
