Content gate with form

A content gate with a form shows a form in an overlay on top of your project. Visitors can't move to other pages until they fill in the form, unless you let them close it. You choose the form, the page where the overlay appears and how soon it appears. Use it to collect leads: visitors read part of your project first and register to see the rest.

Setting up a content gate with a form

You set up a content gate with a form in the project's settings, in the Content gate tab. A project can have one content gate.

1. In the dashboard, hover over the project's tile, hover over the ... button in its top-right corner, and click Settings. Inside a project, you can also click Project settings in the sidebar.
2. Open the Content gate tab.
3. Turn on Activate a gate.
4. Under Select gate type, choose Overlay with form (Maglr, Hubspot, Marketo or Pardot).
5. Next to Choose a form, click Select form. The form module opens in a window.
6. Choose the form you want to show.
7. Under Overlay options, set the page, the delay, the background color and the close button. The options are explained in Content gate overlay options.
8. Click Save.

You can use a Maglr form, or an external Hubspot, Marketo, Pardot or Mailchimp form that you added in the form module. For an external form, set it up as described in its embed article, so Maglr knows when the form is submitted: Embed a Hubspot form, Embed a Marketo form, Embed a Pardot form or Embed a Mailchimp form.

If you save without choosing a form, Maglr shows "Select a form or page to secure the content."

If you don't see the Content gate tab, your plan doesn't include content gates. The tab is also not available for templates.

To show your own designed page with a form instead of a ready-made form overlay, choose Overlay micro content with a form included. in step 4. This option is explained in Custom content gate.

Content gate overlay options

The overlay options of a content gate with a form are in the project's settings, in the Content gate tab, under Overlay options. They control when the form overlay appears and what it looks like:

• Activate overlay on: the page where the overlay appears, such as Page 1 or Page 2. The list shows the project's active pages. The overlay also appears when a visitor opens a later page directly, for example through a link to that page.
• And trigger after: how long after the visitor reaches that page the overlay appears. You can choose 0 Seconds, 1 Second or 2 Seconds. The default is 1 Second.
• Background overlay: the color around the form. The default is black at 80% opacity. Choose a color with some transparency so visitors can still see the project behind it. You set the background of the form itself in the form module.
• Visitor can manually close this overlay without submission: when ticked, the overlay has a close button, so visitors can close the form without registering. You then choose the button's color under Color close button. Closing the overlay only lasts for that visit: when the visitor reloads or opens the project again, the overlay appears again.

How a content gate with a form works for visitors

When a visitor reaches the page you chose, the content gate's form overlay appears and the project is locked. The visitor can't move to other pages until they submit the form.

After a successful submission:

• The overlay disappears and the visitor can move through the whole project.
• The browser remembers the submission until the visitor closes the browser. This applies only to that browser on that device.
• Other projects on the same domain that use the same form as their content gate are unlocked too, for the rest of that browser session.

A visitor who opens the project in another browser or on another device, or after closing their browser, sees the content gate again.

Skip gate URL

The Skip gate URL is a link to your project that skips its content gate. Use it to share the project with people who already gave you their details, so they don't have to register again.

1. Open the project's settings and go to the Content gate tab.
2. Under Skip gate URL, click Copy. To test the link first, click Open.

The Skip gate URL is only available when the project is active. Otherwise the tab shows "Full URL available when project is active".

When someone opens the Skip gate URL, their browser skips the content gate for the rest of the browser session. Anyone who has the link can skip the gate, so share it only with people you want to give access.

Frequently asked questions

Why do visitors see the content gate again after closing it?

Closing the content gate's overlay with its close button only hides it for that visit. When the visitor reloads the project or opens it again, the overlay appears again. The project only stays unlocked after the visitor submits the form, and then for the rest of their browser session.

Do visitors have to fill in the form again in another project?

No, not if the other project uses the same form as its content gate and is on the same domain, and the visitor is still in the same browser session. A project with a different form, or on a different domain, shows its content gate again.

Why don't I see the Content gate tab in my project settings?

The Content gate tab only appears if your plan includes content gates. It's also not available for templates.

Can I use a content gate on a password-protected project?

Not while the project is secured: turn off the project's security before you use a content gate. This includes a project password, login security and security set on the domain. On a secured project, the Content gate tab shows "Turn off the security of this project to use this functionality."

How do I turn off a content gate?

Open the project's settings, go to the Content gate tab, turn off Activate a gate and click Save.
