Integrate Google Search console

Google Search Console is Google's free tool for checking how your site performs in Google Search. To connect it to a Maglr domain, you add the domain as a property in Google Search Console and paste Google's verification file name into the domain's settings in Maglr.


Once your domain is verified, you can use Google Search Console to:


  • Confirm that Google can find and crawl the publications on your domain.
  • Fix indexing problems and request re-indexing of new or updated content.
  • View Google Search traffic data: how often your publications appear in Google Search, which search queries show them, and how often searchers click through.
  • Receive alerts when Google finds indexing, spam or other issues on your content.
  • See which sites link to your content.
  • Troubleshoot issues with AMP, mobile usability and other Search features.


Adding your domain to Google Search Console


To connect Google Search Console to Maglr, you first add your Maglr domain as a property in Google Search Console and copy the name of its HTML verification file. Maglr supports the HTML file method, so choose the URL prefix property type.


  1. Open Google Search Console and sign in.
  2. Click Add property.
  3. Choose URL prefix and enter the root of your Maglr domain, for example https://magazine.example.com/. Don't add the path to a single publication, because verification only works at the root of the domain.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Under the HTML file verification method, copy the name of the file, for example google1234abcd.html. You don't need to download the file.
  6. Leave the Google Search Console tab open, so you can click Verify after you've added the file name in Maglr.

The verification applies to one domain. If your publications are on more than one domain, add a separate property for each domain.


Adding the verification file name in Maglr


To verify a domain in Google Search Console, paste the HTML verification file name that Google gives you into the domain's Google Search Console implementation field in Maglr. You need the Super admin role to change domain settings.


  1. Go to Settings → Domain names.
  2. Click the pencil icon next to the domain you want to verify.
  3. Scroll to Statistics & integration.
  4. Paste the file name into the Google Search Console implementation field, for example google1234abcd.html.
  5. Click Save changes.
  6. Go back to Google Search Console and click Verify.


Enter the file name exactly as Google shows it: no URL, no path, no meta tag and no extra spaces. Maglr then serves the verification file at the root of your domain, for example https://magazine.example.com/google1234abcd.html.


Allowing search engines to index your domain


The "Index for search engines" setting, in the same Statistics & integration section of your domain, decides whether search engines may crawl the domain. Keep it on if you want your publications to appear in Google Search.


  • On: search engines may crawl the domain, and Maglr provides a sitemap at https://<your-domain>/sitemap.xml. You can submit this sitemap in Google Search Console under Sitemaps.
  • Off: search engines are blocked from crawling the domain, and there is no sitemap. Verification in Google Search Console still works, but Google Search Console reports your pages as blocked.

Frequently asked questions


Why does Google Search Console fail to verify my Maglr domain?


Verification usually fails for one of these reasons:


  • The value in the domain's Google Search Console implementation field in Maglr isn't the exact file name Google gives you, for example google1234abcd.html. Remove any URL, path or extra spaces.
  • The URL prefix property in Google Search Console isn't the root of your domain, for example because it includes the path to a publication.
  • You clicked Verify in Google Search Console before you saved the domain settings in Maglr.
  • You added the file name to a different domain than the one in the Google Search Console property.


Can I verify a single publication instead of the whole domain?


No. Maglr serves the Google Search Console verification file only at the root of the domain, so the URL prefix property must be the domain root, for example https://magazine.example.com/. The property then covers all publications on that domain.


Do I need to verify each domain separately?


Yes. The Google Search Console verification is a setting per domain in Maglr. Each domain needs its own property in Google Search Console and its own verification file name in the domain's Google Search Console implementation field.


Can I use the Domain property type with a DNS record?


Not through Maglr's Google Search Console implementation field, which only works with the HTML file method and a URL prefix property. A Domain property is verified with a TXT record that you add at your DNS provider.
