Let viewers subscribe to your publications

Viewers of your publication can subscribe through a Subscribe tab in the side menu, and you can add a pop-up that invites them to do so. Each sign-up sends you the viewer's first name, last name and e-mail address, by e-mail, by webhook or both. Maglr doesn't send updates to your subscribers: you contact them yourself, for example with your own mailing tool.

The subscribe option is set per navigation environment, so it works on every publication that uses that environment. It isn't shown in embedded publications.


Turning on the subscribe form


To show the Subscribe tab in your publication's side menu:


  1. In the dashboard, go to Settings > Navigation environment.
  2. Click Edit settings (pencil icon) next to the navigation environment your publication uses.
  3. Open the Side menu tab.
  4. In the Subscribe row, select the checkbox under Sidepanel.
  5. Optional: also select the checkbox under Navigation menu to add a subscribe icon to the navigation bar.
  6. Click Save navigation.


Viewers can now open the Subscribe tab and fill in their first name, last name and e-mail address. All three fields are required.


Choosing where new subscriptions go


Maglr forwards each new subscription to you by e-mail, by webhook, or both. To choose:


  1. In the navigation environment settings, open the Subscribe tab.
  2. Under "Send new subscriptions to", select Send emails to the contact email ('General' tab), Push subscription with webhook, or both.
  3. If you use the webhook, enter its address in the URL webhook field.
  4. If you use the webhook, click Send testdata to check it. Maglr sends a test sign-up with your own name and e-mail address.
  5. Click Save navigation.


Until the subscribe form is turned on in the Side menu tab, the "Send new subscriptions to" options are greyed out with the message "Enable the subscribe option in the 'Side menu' settings."


A webhook lets you send sign-ups to tools such as Mailchimp or a spreadsheet through Zapier or Make. See our Zapier integration article.


If the webhook is on but doesn't respond, Maglr e-mails the sign-up to you instead, with a note that the webhook isn't responding. Update the webhook URL in the Subscribe tab to fix it.


Setting the e-mail addresses that receive sign-ups


Subscription e-mails go to the contact e-mail addresses of the navigation environment. The checkbox label refers to the General tab, but these addresses are set in the Contact tab:


  1. In the navigation environment settings, open the Contact tab.
  2. Under "Send new contact requests to", enter an address in the "Contact email address" field.
  3. Optional: click + to add more addresses.
  4. Click Save navigation.


If the contact form is turned off in the Side menu tab, these fields are greyed out with the message "Enable the contact option in the 'Side menu' settings."


The contact form uses the same addresses. If no address is entered, subscription e-mails go to the account's main user.


Showing a subscribe pop-up


The subscribe pop-up is a small overlay that invites viewers to subscribe once they reach the second page of your publication. Its button opens the Subscribe tab. To turn it on:


  1. In the navigation environment settings, open the Subscribe tab.
  2. Switch on Activate subscribe call-to-action.
  3. Click Save navigation.


The pop-up only works when the subscribe form is turned on in the Side menu tab. After a viewer closes the pop-up or clicks its button, it isn't shown to that viewer again for a year. You can change the texts of the pop-up and the subscribe form in the Texts tab.

Subscriber data


Maglr doesn't keep a list of your subscribers. Each sign-up is forwarded to you by e-mail, webhook or both. Notification e-mails, including the backup e-mail sent when a webhook fails, are kept in Maglr's e-mail log for up to a year.


Tracking new subscriptions


When a viewer subscribes through the side menu, Maglr sends an Analytics event / GTM event. In Google Tag Manager, look for this event:

maglrCategory: Interface-sidemenu
maglrAction: Register-tab
maglrLabel: Submit_register_form


With a Google Analytics 4 code (starting with G-), this event isn't sent to Google Analytics directly. Use Google Tag Manager to pass it on.


Frequently asked questions


Does Maglr send updates to my subscribers?


No. When a viewer subscribes, Maglr sends you their first name, last name and e-mail address by e-mail, webhook or both. You contact your subscribers yourself, for example with your own mailing tool.


Does Maglr keep a list of my subscribers?


No. Maglr forwards each sign-up to you by e-mail, webhook or both, and keeps no subscriber list. Notification e-mails, including the backup e-mail sent when a webhook fails, are kept in Maglr's e-mail log for up to a year.


What happens if my webhook stops working?


If the webhook doesn't respond, Maglr e-mails the sign-up to the navigation environment's contact e-mail addresses instead, with a note that the webhook isn't responding. If no contact address is set, the e-mail goes to the account's main user. To fix it, update the webhook URL in the Subscribe tab of the navigation environment settings and click Send testdata.


Why don't I see the Subscribe tab in an embedded publication?


The Subscribe tab is never shown in embedded publications. Viewers can subscribe when they open the publication on its own URL.
