Choosing navigation types

The navigation type is the menu visitors use to move through a publication. You choose it in a navigation environment, separately for each publication type: Slide navigation and, if your account includes them, Stack navigation and Presenter apps.

This article is about the style of the navigation menu. To switch a project between a slide publication and a stack publication, see Switch publication type.

Changing the navigation type

To change the navigation type of a navigation environment:

1. Go to Settings → Navigation environment.
2. Click Edit settings (pencil icon) next to the environment you want to change.
3. Open the Navigation menu tab.
4. Select the publication type: Slide navigation, Stack navigation or Presenter apps.
5. Under Choose navigation type, select a menu. The preview on the left shows the result.
6. Click Save navigation.

The Stack navigation tab appears only if your account includes Stack publications. The Presenter apps tab appears only if your account includes the Presenter app.

Navigation types per publication type

Each publication type in a navigation environment offers its own set of navigation types:

• Slide navigation: No menu, Classic menu, Pagename menu, Minimal menu, Text menu, Dots menu and Stories menu. A new navigation environment uses Classic menu, with the menu bar at the bottom.
• Stack navigation: No menu and Right top menu.
• Presenter apps: No menu, Classic menu and Minimal menu.

No menu hides the navigation menu completely.

Slide navigation menus

Slide navigation offers six menu styles, plus No menu. The screenshots below show each style in a slide publication.

Classic menu

Classic menu is the default navigation type for slide publications. It shows a menu bar with your logo (if you added one), previous and next buttons around the current page number, and icon buttons on the right, such as the side menu icon. Clicking the page number opens a row of page thumbnails.

Pagename menu

Pagename menu shows a menu bar with the side menu icon, the current page number and the name of the current page, with your logo, if you added one, on the other side.

Minimal menu

Minimal menu shows only a small button with the side menu icon and the current page number, instead of a full menu bar. You can place it at the top or bottom of the page, in a corner or centered.

Text menu

Text menu shows a menu bar with the names of the pages as text links. The current page is highlighted.

Dots menu

Dots menu shows a menu bar with one dot per page, with your logo on the left and icon buttons on the right. On a desktop screen, pointing at a dot shows a preview of that page above it, with its thumbnail, page number and name.

Stories menu

Stories menu shows a row of bars, one per page, similar to stories on social media. The bar of the current page is highlighted. Your logo, icon buttons and the side menu icon sit on the right of the menu bar.

Menu bar position, button style and navigation arrows

Besides the navigation type, the Navigation menu tab of a navigation environment has more options for the menu. Which ones you see depends on the publication type and the menu you chose:

• Menu bar position: sets where the menu bar sits (Position menu bar) and how it relates to the page (Display menu: Menu next to page, Menu on top the page or Gradient menu on top the page). The available positions depend on the menu: Classic menu can sit at the bottom or left, Minimal menu in any corner or at the top or bottom, and the other menus at the top or bottom. Display menu isn't shown for Minimal menu, and Presenter apps don't offer Gradient menu on top the page. This section doesn't appear for No menu or on Stack navigation. On Presenter apps, it appears only when Automatically hide menubar is on.
• Button style: Square buttons & icons or Round buttons & icons. Available for every publication type.
• Extra navigation arrows: No arrows, Arrows left and right, Arrows bottom right or Arrows carousel. Available on Slide navigation and Presenter apps.
• Horizontal progress bar: Show progress adds a bar next to the menu that shows how far a visitor is in the publication. Available on Slide navigation for every menu except No menu and Classic menu, and on Presenter apps when Minimal menu is selected.
• Options: on Stack navigation, Show close button at top left. On Presenter apps, Automatically hide menubar, which hides the menu within 2 seconds after the app opens; a double tap shows it again.

Adding additional environments

Each navigation environment has its own navigation settings, so you can add environments when parts of your organization need different domains, branding or navigation. Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see the Stack navigation or Presenter apps tab?

The Stack navigation tab in a navigation environment's Navigation menu settings appears only if your account includes Stack publications. The Presenter apps tab appears only if your account includes the Presenter app. The Slide navigation tab is always available.

Why can't I change the menu bar position?

The menu bar position in a navigation environment's Navigation menu settings is not available in these cases:

• No menu is selected as the navigation type.
• You are on the Stack navigation tab.
• You are on the Presenter apps tab and Automatically hide menubar is off. When it is on, the section appears, but the position itself can't be changed.
