Hide content from Search Engines

To hide your publications from search engines such as Google and Bing, turn off Index for search engines in the settings of the domain they are published on. Search engines index the publications on a domain only when this setting is on, and a newly added domain starts with it off.

Turning off search engine indexing for a domain

You need the Super admin role to change domain settings.

1. Go to Settings → Domain names.
2. Click the pencil icon in the row of the domain you want to hide from search engines.
3. Scroll down to Statistics & integration.
4. Turn off Index for search engines.
5. Click Save changes.

To let search engines index the domain again, follow the same steps and turn Index for search engines on.

The setting applies to every project published on that domain. There is no indexing setting for a single project. If a project appears on more than one domain, turn the setting off on each of them.

Securing projects or domains to keep them out of search engines

Securing a project or domain (for example with a password) also keeps it out of search engines, because search engines can't get past the security.

Why isn't my new domain showing up in Google?

A newly added domain starts with Index for search engines turned off, so search engines don't index its publications. To let search engines index the domain:

1. Go to Settings → Domain names.

3. Scroll down to Statistics & integration.
4. Turn on Index for search engines.
5. Click Save changes.

How long does it take for my pages to disappear from search results?

After you turn off Index for search engines for a domain, pages that search engines have already indexed take some time to disappear from the search results. How long this takes depends on the search engine, so there is no fixed time.

Can I hide one project but keep the rest of the domain indexed?

Not with the indexing setting: Index for search engines applies to every project on the domain. To keep one project out of search engines while the rest stays indexed, secure that project (for example with a password). Or make sure the project only appears on domains that have Index for search engines turned off: a domain's Filter projects setting decides which projects it shows.

How can I check whether a domain is indexed by search engines?

Open the domain's settings: go to Settings → Domain names and click the pencil icon in the row of the domain. Under Statistics & integration, check whether Index for search engines is on or off. If your Projects page has a domain menu at the top of the sidebar, you can also select the domain there: a label next to the page title then shows "index" when search engines may index the projects on that domain, or "no-index" when they may not.
