Reducing video file size

Videos you upload with Select from library in the video element's settings, or drop into the editor, can be up to 100 MB each. If your video is larger, or isn't an MP4 file, convert it to a smaller MP4 file with a free tool such as HandBrake before you upload it.


Video upload requirements in Maglr


A video you upload to the Maglr library must meet these requirements:


  • File size: 100 MB or less per video. Upload the video with Select from library in the video element's settings, or drop the video file into the editor. The library you open with Open library under My library accepts files of up to 25 MB.
  • Format: MP4 is the recommended format. MOV, AVI and WMV files can't be uploaded, so convert them to MP4 first.
  • No compression after upload: Maglr stores the video file as you upload it. It doesn't compress or convert the file, so reduce the file size before you upload it.


Compressing a video with HandBrake


HandBrake is a free, open-source video converter for Windows, macOS and Linux. It converts video from most formats, such as .mov, .avi, .wmv and .m4v, to MP4, and can reduce the file size while keeping good quality for web use. Re-encoding often reduces the file size of a video that is already MP4, too.


To reduce a video's file size with HandBrake so it fits Maglr's 100 MB video upload limit:


  1. Open HandBrake and click Open Source, then select the video you want to compress.
  2. In the Save As field, enter a name for the compressed file.
  3. Next to To, click Browse... and choose the folder to save the compressed file in.
  4. On the Summary tab, set Format to MP4 File.
  5. Select the Web Optimized checkbox.
  6. Click Start.
  7. Wait until the status bar shows "Encode Finished.", then open the folder you chose to find the compressed video.
  8. In the video element's settings, click Select from library and upload the compressed video.

If the compressed video is still larger than 100 MB, choose a lower-resolution preset in HandBrake's Preset dropdown and encode the video again.


Frequently asked questions


What is the maximum video file size I can upload to Maglr?

Can I upload MOV or AVI video files to Maglr?


No. The Maglr library doesn't accept MOV, AVI or WMV video files. Convert the video to MP4 first, for example with HandBrake, and then upload the MP4 file.


Does Maglr compress videos after I upload them?


No. Maglr stores your video file as you upload it and doesn't compress or convert it. To get a smaller file, reduce the video's size before you upload it, for example with HandBrake.
