Image types & sizes

You can upload images to Maglr in JPEG, PNG, SVG, GIF and WebP format. Each image file can be up to 10 MB after Maglr's automatic compression, and JPEG, PNG and WebP images larger than 5760 × 3240 pixels (3240 × 5760 pixels for portrait images) are scaled down when you upload them.

Supported image formats

You can upload images in JPEG, PNG, SVG, GIF and WebP format. Formats such as HEIC are rejected. Each format suits a different kind of image:

• JPEG: for photos and other images without transparency, such as a photo from a camera or a background image.
• PNG: for images with a transparent background, such as a cut-out of a person or a product. Maglr converts every PNG without transparency to JPEG when you upload it, and saves it as a .jpg file. A PNG with transparency stays a PNG, unless it's larger than 10 MB.
• SVG: for logos, icons and other vector graphics. SVGs stay sharp at any size. SVG files that contain scripts or embedded HTML are rejected; export a plain SVG instead.
• GIF: for short animations. GIFs aren't compressed or resized on upload, so their animation is kept, and they count against the 10 MB limit at their original size.
• WebP: a web format that combines small file sizes with optional transparency. Maglr compresses and resizes WebP images like JPEG.

Upload limits and automatic compression

When you upload an image in Maglr, for example by dropping it on the canvas or through the media library, Maglr compresses JPEG, PNG and WebP images before they're uploaded. This is what happens to each image:

• Accepted formats: JPEG, PNG, SVG, GIF and WebP.
• File size: image files larger than 10 MB after Maglr's automatic compression are rejected.
• Dimensions: JPEG, PNG and WebP images larger than 5760 × 3240 pixels (3240 × 5760 pixels for portrait images) are scaled down automatically to fit. Smaller images keep their size.
• Quality: JPEG and WebP images are re-encoded at 80% quality.
• PNG without transparency: always converted to JPEG and saved as a .jpg file.
• PNG with transparency larger than 10 MB: converted to JPEG, so the transparency is lost. When you add the image in the editor without opening the media library, for example by dropping or pasting it onto the canvas or dropping it on the Media panel, a warning appears: "Transparency has been removed from the following image: [file name]. Manually export the image to keep its transparency." Uploads through the media library don't show this warning. To keep the transparency, export the PNG under 10 MB before uploading it.
• GIF and SVG: never compressed or resized. A GIF or SVG file larger than 10 MB can't be uploaded.

Because JPEG, PNG and WebP images are scaled down to fit within 5760 × 3240 pixels (3240 × 5760 pixels for portrait images), uploading a larger image has no benefit.

Image resolution

For a sharp result, use an image that is at least as wide, in pixels, as the area it fills on the canvas. A smaller image looks pixelated when it's scaled up. A much larger image doesn't look better, but it does make the file heavier and slower to load.

File size and loading speed

Large image files make pages load more slowly for readers, especially on mobile connections. A smaller export of an image often looks the same as a large one: a 2 MB version of a 10 MB photo can show little to no visible difference, and it loads much faster.

Maglr compresses JPEG, PNG and WebP images automatically when you upload them, so exporting at maximum quality adds file size without improving what readers see. Aim for the smallest file that still looks sharp at the size it's shown in your project.

Naming your files

Give image files descriptive names, for example 2026-spring-cover-hero.jpg, so you can find them in the media library later.

Why did my PNG turn into a JPG after uploading?

Maglr converts every PNG without transparency to JPEG when you upload it, and saves it as a .jpg file. For images without transparency, a JPEG file is usually smaller than a PNG file. A PNG with transparency stays a PNG, unless it's larger than 10 MB.

Why did my image lose its transparent background?

A PNG with transparency that is larger than 10 MB is converted to JPEG when you upload it, and JPEG doesn't support transparency. When you add the image in the editor without opening the media library, for example by dropping or pasting it onto the canvas or dropping it on the Media panel, a warning tells you which image lost its transparency. Uploads through the media library don't show this warning. To keep the transparent background, export the PNG under 10 MB and upload it again.

What is the maximum image size I can upload?
