Format

When using videos in Maglr, we usually only recommend one format of video to use.

We recommend using the MP4 format for videos. This format allows for flexibility in settings of quality, but also maintains a good file size for usage in many situations. MP4 is universally used for many applications. If you have created a video, even platforms such as YouTube recommend it when uploading videos, allowing the easy integration.

Resolution

Resolution in a video is similar in terms of using images. While the resolution doesn't matter too much, it is always good for your video to match the current screen resolution for most users. It is common to use a resolution of 1920x1080 (aspect ratio 16:9). And when you are working on a project using mobile view, consider importing square or vertical videos with a resolution of 1080x1920 (aspect ration 9:16). And if you're making a video and have recorded at this resolution, we recommend keeping the video quality to 1080p.

FPS (Frames Per Second)

We recommend keeping the resolution of the video to the resolution recorded or lowering the resolution to the minimum of 29 or 30fps. 30fps is ideal for a normal video that doesn't have a lot of camera movement in them. If you have a video that is recorded in 60fps and don't mind the file size too much, then you don't have to change the FPS. But lowering from 60fps to 30fps is perfectly fine.

These days, most videos are rendered in 30 or 60fps. YouTube supports 30 or 60fps but also allows higher frames per second. Usually going higher than 60 is not worth the file size for the small difference in motion. Do not try to render a video above the recorded fps, the outcome you want will not work, keep it to the same fps that you have recorded at or lower is to 30. Videos recorded on this help site are recorded and rendered at 30fps.

Size

The size of videos can differ but doesn't matter that much. If you upload your videos to YouTube, then follow the YouTubes guidelines for uploading to their platform. Use their sharing links for importing your video into a project.

If you are to manually add a video as a file, then try and keep a decent file size while maintaining a good quality of the video. The frame rate, data rate and duration of video can affect how large the size of the video is. We don't recommend using a huge video file size. Having a decent size can maintain great quality while ensuring the publication loading speed keeps to a maximum.

Audio

More of this subject is discussed in the next article, but we will cover it briefly for videos. Usually, default settings of an MP4 file are perfectly fine, of a 128kb or slightly lower is good for videos and general audio.

Naming convention

While this isn't necessarily an important subject, in order to keep an efficient workflow going and ensuring you know what each file is, we recommend a structured naming convention. This will help you to recognize the files and where they belong when you are searching for them in your library or computer. Giving your files a randomly generated name can really slow down your work time.
