Supported video formats


Upload video files to Maglr as MP4. MP4 is the only video format the media library accepts. If you select another type of video file there, the media library shows the message "The selected file type is not allowed".


MP4 plays in all modern browsers and keeps good quality at a small file size. It is also the format YouTube recommends for uploads.


When you drag a video file from your computer straight into the editor, Maglr also accepts WebM and Ogg files. Use MP4 unless you have a specific reason to use WebM.


Other video file types, such as .mov, .avi and .mkv, are not accepted. Videos exported from a Mac or iPhone are often .mov files: convert them to MP4 with your video editing or export tool before you upload them.


Maximum file size


The maximum size of a video file you upload to Maglr depends on where you upload it:


  • From a Video element, with Select from library and then uploading in the media library: up to 100 MB.
  • By dragging the file from your computer into the editor: up to 100 MB.
  • In the media library opened with Open library in the left panel: up to 25 MB, the limit for all files uploaded there.


A file over the limit is rejected with an error message, and the upload does not complete.


Maglr does not convert or compress uploaded video. Every visitor who plays the video loads the exact file you uploaded, so a large file takes longer to start and play for every reader, on every device. Compress your video before you upload it.


These factors determine the size of a video file:


  • the frame rate
  • the data rate (bitrate)
  • the duration


These size limits apply only to video files you upload. They do not apply to YouTube or Vimeo videos, because those platforms stream the video themselves.



Match the resolution of a video you upload to Maglr to how readers will view it:


  • Landscape: 1920x1080 (aspect ratio 16:9). This suits most desktop screens.
  • Vertical, for mobile view: 1080x1920 (aspect ratio 9:16).
  • Square: 1080x1080 (aspect ratio 1:1), if your design calls for it.


Don't upload 4K video. It multiplies the file size, usually without a visible benefit in a publication.

For a video you upload to Maglr, follow these frame rate guidelines:


  • Export at 30 fps, or at 29.97 or 25 fps if that is what you recorded at. 30 fps is enough for most video.
  • 60 fps is fine for video with a lot of fast motion, but it makes the file larger. Lowering a 60 fps recording to 30 fps is fine.
  • Never export at a higher frame rate than you recorded at. It increases the file size without making the motion smoother.


Audio settings


The default audio settings of an MP4 export are fine for a video you upload to Maglr. An audio bitrate of about 128 kbps is enough for speech and general audio.


File naming


Give each video file a clear, structured name before you upload it to Maglr, for example by project and topic. A clear name makes the file easier to find in your library and on your computer than a randomly generated one.


Videos hosted on YouTube or Vimeo


For a video hosted on YouTube or Vimeo, follow that platform's own guidelines for format and file size. To add it to a project, paste the video's share link into the Video element. The platform streams the video, so Maglr's upload size limits do not apply.

Frequently asked questions


Can I upload a .mov file to Maglr?


No. Maglr does not accept .mov video files. Convert the video to MP4 with your video editing or export tool, then upload the MP4 file.


Why does my video upload fail?


A video upload to Maglr fails when the file type or the file size isn't accepted:


  • The media library accepts MP4 video files only. Another type of video file shows the message "The selected file type is not allowed". Dragging a file into the editor also accepts WebM and Ogg.
  • A video file can be up to 100 MB when you upload it from a Video element or drag it into the editor, and up to 25 MB when you upload it in the media library opened with Open library.


Convert the video to MP4, or compress it, and upload it again. To upload a video file larger than 25 MB, select the Video element and use Select from library.


Does Maglr compress my video?


No. Maglr stores an uploaded video file exactly as you uploaded it and plays that same file to every visitor; it does not make smaller versions. A visitor who plays the video loads the full file, so compress the video before you upload it to keep it starting and playing smoothly.


Is there a size limit for YouTube or Vimeo videos?


Maglr sets no size limit for YouTube or Vimeo videos. Maglr's upload size limits apply only to video files you upload to Maglr. YouTube and Vimeo apply their own upload limits.
