Publish your project live

Publishing a project live makes it publicly available on its live URL, which anyone can open on a desktop or a mobile device. You publish from the Publish button on the project's page overview, the screen that lists your project's pages.

Before you publish

A project can only go live when it has a live URL. A project gets its live URL from a domain name, usually the domain coupled to the project's category. If the project has no domain name, the Publish live button stays greyed out and the Publish menu shows one of these messages:

  • "No live URL: this project is not in a category. Add it to a category in the project settings."
  • "No live URL: the category of this project is not coupled to a domain name. Couple it under Settings > Categories."

Publishing a project live

To publish a project live for the first time:

  1. Open the project to go to its page overview.
  2. Click the blue Publish button in the top-right corner.
  3. At the bottom of the menu, turn on the switch so it reads Project active.
  4. Click Publish live.

The project is now available on its live URL. The Publish live button stays greyed out while the switch reads Project inactive.

Finding and sharing the live URL

Once a project is live, its live URL is shown in the left sidebar of the project's page overview, under the project thumbnail. Click the URL to open the live project. The live URL is also shown in the Publish menu, below the Publish live button. You can share the live URL anywhere, and anyone with the link can view the project on a desktop or a mobile device.

Publishing changes after going live

You can keep editing a project after it is live. Changes you make don't appear on the live URL until you click Publish live again. The number on the red badge on the Publish button is how many pages have changes that aren't live yet; the badge shows ! instead when only project-level changes, such as settings, are waiting to be published.

Previewing changes before they go live

The preview URL is separate from the live URL, so you can check your changes, or share them for feedback, before visitors of the live URL see them. To publish your changes to the preview URL:

  1. On the project's page overview, click Publish.
  2. Under Temporary preview, click Update preview. If the project doesn't have a preview yet, the button reads Create preview, and clicking it opens the Preview Link panel first: choose whether to tick Enable comments option in preview, then click Save to create the preview.
  3. Open the preview URL shown in the Temporary preview block.

Making changes live

To publish your changes to the live URL:

  1. On the project's page overview, click Publish.
  2. Click Publish live.

Page status indicators

Each page on a project's page overview has a small coloured square that shows its publishing status:

  • Green: the page is published, live or in the preview, and hasn't changed since.
  • Orange: the page has changes that haven't been published yet.
  • Red: the page is set inactive. The page row is also faded.

Pages that are in a preview also get a tag:

  • In preview: the page is published but still in preview. Updates to this page can only be seen via the preview link.
  • Not in preview: the page was changed after the preview was published. Click Update preview in the Publish menu to see these changes in the preview.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Publish live button greyed out?

The Publish live button in a project's Publish menu is greyed out in these cases:

  • The project is inactive: turn on the switch at the bottom of the Publish menu so it reads Project active.
  • There is nothing new to publish: the menu shows "No new updates found".
  • The project has no live URL: the project isn't in a category, or its category isn't coupled to a domain name. Add the project to a category in the project settings, or couple the category to a domain name under Settings > Categories.
  • No page in the project is active: the menu shows "No active spreads" instead of the publish options. Activate a page or add a new one.
  • Your account can't publish live: the menu shows "You do not have permission to publish projects live." Ask an admin of your Maglr account for access.

How do I take a published project offline?

To take a live project offline:

  1. On the project's page overview, click Publish. The button looks faded when there are no new changes, but it still opens the menu.
  2. Turn off the switch at the bottom of the menu so it reads Project inactive.
  3. Click the red Set inactive button.

The project is then no longer available on its live URL.

Can I check my changes before they go live?

Yes. Publish your changes to the project's preview URL, which is separate from the live URL. On the project's page overview, click Publish, then under Temporary preview click Update preview. If the project has no preview yet, click Create preview instead, then click Save in the Preview Link panel that opens. Open the preview URL shown in that block to check the changes. When you're ready, click Publish live in the same menu to make the changes live.
